How to Install a VST Plugin: Complete Guide for Windows and Mac
You have just purchased or downloaded a VST plugin. You unzip the file, stare at a .dll or .vst3 and wonder what to do next. Your DAW does not show the plugin anywhere. Sound familiar?
Installing VST plugins correctly is one of those things that seems obvious once you know how — but trips up almost every producer at least once. This guide walks through the full process step by step, covering Windows and Mac, all major file formats, and the most common DAWs.
VST Plugin File Types Explained
Before you install anything, it helps to know what you are working with. Plugins come in several formats, and each DAW supports different ones.
VST2 (.dll on Windows, .vst on Mac) — The original Steinberg format, now over 20 years old. Still widely used, but being phased out by major DAWs including Ableton Live 12 and newer versions of Logic.
VST3 (.vst3 on both platforms) — The current standard. Better performance, supports note expression, and is fully backwards-compatible with DAWs that support VST2. When a plugin offers both formats, always choose VST3.
AU — Audio Units (.component) — Mac-only format used by Logic Pro and GarageBand. If you are on Mac, most plugins will install both VST3 and AU versions simultaneously.
AAX — The Pro Tools format. Requires a separate AAX version from the developer. Not available for all plugins.
How to Install a VST Plugin on Windows
Step 1: Run the installer (if one is provided)
Many plugins come with a .exe installer. Run it and follow the on-screen steps. The installer will usually detect your existing plugin folders automatically and place the files in the right location. When given a choice between VST2 and VST3, select VST3.
Step 2: Manual installation (for .dll or .vst3 files)
If you receive a zip file containing only a .dll or .vst3 file with no installer, you need to place it in the correct system folder manually.
For VST3 files, copy the .vst3 file or folder to:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesVST3
For VST2 .dll files, the location depends on your DAW settings. Common locations include:
C:Program FilesVSTPluginsC:Program FilesSteinbergVSTPlugins
Check your DAW’s preferences under Plugin Paths or VST Directories to see exactly which folder it scans.
Step 3: Rescan plugins in your DAW
Once the files are in place, open your DAW and trigger a plugin rescan. In most DAWs this happens automatically when you restart the application. In others, you need to do it manually — see the DAW-specific instructions below.
How to Install a VST Plugin on Mac
Step 1: Run the installer
Mac plugins usually come as a .pkg installer. Open it and follow the prompts. The installer handles everything — placing VST3 files in the correct system folder and AU components in the correct Apple directory.
Step 2: Manual installation
For VST3 files without an installer, copy the .vst3 bundle to:
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/
For AU components, copy the .component file to:
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/
Note: use the system-level Library folder at /Library/, not your user-level Library at ~/Library/. Both work, but the system folder makes plugins available to all users and is scanned by all DAWs by default.
Step 3: Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) note
If you are on an Apple Silicon Mac, check whether the plugin has a native ARM build. Older VST plugins may only have Intel builds, which run through Rosetta 2 — this works but uses more CPU. Native Apple Silicon builds run significantly more efficiently. Always download the Apple Silicon or Universal version when available.
DAW-Specific Rescan Instructions
Ableton Live
Go to Preferences → Plug-Ins. Make sure your VST3 plugin folder is listed under VST3 Plug-In Custom Folder. Click Rescan at the bottom of the window. After rescanning, new plugins appear in the browser under Plug-Ins.
FL Studio
Go to Options → Manage plugins. Click Find plugins and make sure your VST folder is included in the search paths. FL Studio scans all subfolders, so one parent directory is enough.
Cubase / Nuendo
Go to Studio → VST Plug-in Manager. Click the update/rescan button. Cubase scans the default VST3 system folder automatically — manual installs to that folder are picked up on restart.
Logic Pro
Logic scans AU plugins automatically from the system Components folder. After installing a new AU plugin, restart Logic. If the plugin does not appear, go to Logic Pro → Settings → Plug-in Manager and click Reset and Rescan Selection.
Studio One
Go to Studio One → Options → Locations → VST Plug-ins. Add your plugin folder if it is not already listed. Click OK and Studio One will rescan on the next launch.
Common Installation Problems and How to Fix Them
Plugin installed but not showing in DAW — The most common cause is that the plugin was placed in a folder your DAW does not scan. Check your DAW’s plugin path settings and confirm the plugin folder is listed. Run a manual rescan.
Plugin shows as “Failed” or “Blacklisted” — This usually means the plugin crashed during the initial scan. In Ableton, check the Preferences → Plug-Ins tab. In Logic, check the Plug-in Manager. You can force a rescan of failed plugins after updating the plugin to a newer version.
Wrong architecture (32-bit vs 64-bit) — Most modern DAWs are 64-bit and will not load 32-bit plugins. Check the plugin’s system requirements and download the 64-bit version. If only a 32-bit version exists, you may need a bridge application such as jBridge on Windows.
Plugin installed but sounds wrong or has no audio output — Check your DAW’s audio routing. Instrument plugins need to be loaded on an instrument track, not an audio track. Effects plugins need to be inserted on the correct channel.
